The National Platform “AGRO.BH” that contributes to achieving development goals

The National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector (NIAD), in cooperation with the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA), the NSSA and a number of official institutions, launched the first comprehensive agricultural platform in the Kingdom of Bahrain to develop and promote the agricultural sector by unifying national efforts to serve the sector, by establishing a national database that helps achieve the economic, social and environmental development goals of the Kingdom. This project is considered the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which was able to establish the first agricultural geographic information data base specialized in date palm trees. This is due to its importance in the Bahraini heritage at the cultural, economic, and nutritional level. The total palm trees and their geographical distribution at the level of the Kingdom of Bahrain governorates are acquired accurately, in order to enable researchers and investors to carry out many researches, especially in the field of food security in the Kingdom of Bahrain, such as estimating the amount of production for each palm tree and many others. This project did not stop at this point, but extended to studying the botanical indicators of each palm, which made it possible to obtain readings of the state of each palm in terms of its health and its vulnerability to environmental pressures and other factors affecting it through satellite images such as palm weevil, plant diseases, environmental pollutants, etc.

Satellite data used to map greenhouses

A team of young national competencies working at the NSSA lab for Processing Satellite Images and Data, was able to conduct a study to inventory the number and precise location of greenhouses in Bahrain, their spatial distribution amongst four governorates, as well as forecast their total area for 2020, using spatial imagery and data.

Surveying the number of Palm Trees in the Kingdom using Space Data and AI

Based on high-resolution photos and precise space data, the National Space Sciences Agency (NSSA) has undertaken a census to examine the number of palm trees throughout the kingdom. The study is in keeping with the NSSA's strategic goal of addressing national needs by delivering space data and earth observation information that support the national comprehensive development agenda and advance space science.

Participation in the Preparations for the Fifty-Eighth Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

Responding to the call of the UNOOSA, the NSSA participated in the virtual preparatory meetings due to the exceptional circumstances that the world is experiencing at the present time. The meeting was to discuss the draft agenda and arrangements related to the regulations for the fifty-eighth session of the Scientific Committee and the Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on Space Usage Foreign Affairs for peaceful purposes.
