For the first time in Bahrain, the National Space Science Agency (NSSA) in collaboration with Clever Play Education and Training organized the NASA Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge Virtual Hackathon that took place during a period of 48 hours (30th and 31st May).

The event was a global competition where thousands of participants worldwide, created more than 2000 virtual teams, and worked together during the current global pandemic to understand the human and economic response to the virus by tackling COVID-19 using Earth observation data from NASA, ESA, JAXA, CS and CNES in this global, virtual Hackathon.

Virtual teams worked together to propose solutions to one of twelve challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic that focused on the following themes:

  • Learning about COVID-19 and its spread using space-based data
  • Local response/change and solutions
  • Impacts of COVID-19 on the Earth system/Earth system response
